AI Expert Chat

The **AI Expert Chat** is a conversational activity grounded in one of your
:ref:`knowledge_bases`. Unlike the general :ref:`AI Tutor <ai_tutor>`, it answers from the
specific documents you provide, making it well suited to course materials, policies, or
reference content.

Before you start
----------------

Create and sync a knowledge base with the source documents the chat should draw on. See
:ref:`knowledge_bases`.

Authoring an AI Expert Chat
---------------------------

#. Add an AI Expert Chat activity to a course via :ref:`Deep Linking <deep_linking>`.
#. Select the **knowledge base** the chat should use as its source of truth.
#. Configure the chat's framing and any introductory guidance for learners.
#. Save and publish. See :ref:`runtime_authoring`.

The learner experience
----------------------

#. A learner launches the activity and sees a chat interface.
#. They ask questions; the assistant retrieves relevant passages from the connected knowledge
   base and answers based on them.

As with other AI tools, interactions are logged and metered against your :ref:`credits
<billing>`.

Tips
----

* Keep the knowledge base focused — a tightly scoped set of sources produces more reliable,
  on-topic answers than a large, mixed collection.
* Re-sync the knowledge base after updating its sources so the chat reflects your latest content.
